Following the interest from Celtic, Aston Villa and Ingolstadt, Huddersfield Town’s energetic enthusiastic manager has been linked with yet another club as Norwich City contemplate replacing Alex Neil with the German manager.

David Wagner has defied the odds with his Huddersfield Town side as they entered the November international break in the third position, a feat that is supremely impressive for a side that finished 19th in the Championship last season.

This impressive start to the season hasn’t gone unnoticed with a number of sides showing an interest in David Wagner who hope they can tempt the German manager away from the West Yorkshire side.

David Wagner just celebrated his one year anniversary with the club, in just a year, there has been a noticeable revolutionary change on and off the field which has seen Huddersfield develop a true identity on the field which is recognisable and constantly progressing as the quality of the players at Wagner’s disposal improves.

Off the field, Huddersfield has been equally impressive as average attendances of over 20,000 for a team of Huddersfield’s size should be commended and respected, the personality of Wagner and his squad has earned the support of the entire town.

Although David Wagner is proving to be one of the brightest young managers in English football, the 45-year-old manager comes across as sensible and level headed, it would take a specific set of circumstances to see him leave Huddersfield Town.

The Perfect Storm

At Huddersfield Town, there has been a perfect storm which has seen such an astronomical rise for the Terriers, after lifelong Huddersfield Town fan Dean Hoyle took the risk to take a chance with the relatively inexperienced manager, there has been a continuation of that trust.

A whirlwind summer transfer window saw Huddersfield become one of the most active football clubs in the transfer market with thirteen new arrivals. David Wagner’s charm and vision persuaded a number of his compatriots who until that point had never played outside of Germany to take the risk and join him at the West Yorkshire side.

David Wagner’s rhetoric is notably a long-term open minded vision for Huddersfield Town, he speaks of what he and Huddersfield could humbly achieve, a rhetoric which would suggest that he wouldn’t abandon his project at the first sign of interest from elsewhere.

Although at times both last season and this season there have been disappointing uncharacteristic performances there has been great levels of patience shown by the club hierarchy and fans.

The levels of belief that have been shown in David Wagner is unusual, a stance and mindset that seems alien in the contemporary football culture where results and short-term progress proves so crucial.

What next?

After Dean Hoyle issued a statement that David Wagner would not leave Huddersfield Town for another Championship side following the interest that was shown by Aston Villa, the interest remains with Norwich City being the latest club to show their interest.

As Alex Neil faces increasing amounts of pressure to re-find the success that earned Norwich City promotion to the Premier League, there has been rumours linking David Wagner with Norwich City.

Although it should come as no surprise, I’m sceptical about the rumour as David Wagner’s style of management of slow progress over the course of the season is only suitable for clubs that are open minded and willing to be patient and wait for the success to come.

Both Aston Villa and Norwich City as newly relegated sides are looking for short-term success as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

There is a contradiction between David Wagner’s patience and philosophy for long term sustainable success and Norwich City’s desire to return to the Premier League through any means necessary.

Rather than David Wagner, I expect Norwich City to take the easy short term option and select an experienced Championship manager with experience of gaining promotion to the Premier League.

Therefore, there is no doubt in my mind that David Wagner will continue to attract attention across the course of the season, however, I expect David Wagner to stay at Huddersfield Town and reject the advances from Norwich City like he did with Aston Villa. It will take a significant change of circumstance to see Wagner leave Huddersfield Town in the foreseeable future.
