An opinion piece on Huddersfield’s latest target, Red Bull Leipzig’s Oliver Burke.
Earlier in the week, German reports [Bild] suggested that Huddersfield Town were one of two Premier League clubs, alongside newly promoted rivals Brighton & Hove Albion who were interested in taking Red Bull Leipzig’s Oliver Burke on loan.
This has now been confirmed by British media outlets with James Nursey of the Daily Mirror confirming that David Wagner was hoping to finalise a deal for Tom Ince and also secure the signing of Oliver Burke on loan.
The Scottish international burst onto the scene for Nottingham Forest last season when he scored four goals in five Championship appearances.
The emergence of Oliver Burke attracted the attention of the Premier League, however, it was the controversial German side Red Bull Leipzig that secured the 20-year-old winger’s signature.
However, since making the switch to the Bundesliga side, Oliver Burke has struggled to displace Swedish international Emil Forsburg or Austrian winger Marcel Sabitzer in Red Bull Leipzig’s starting line-up.
Although Oliver Burke made twenty-five appearances for Red Bull Leipzig last season, the Scottish starlet made only five starting appearances.
With a growing lack of playing time and Red Bull Leipzig’s preparations for their debut season in the Champions League, questions have been asked about where Oliver Burke’s immediate future lies.
Despite Red Bull Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick stating that Oliver Burke’s future very much remained at the Red Bull Arena, there does appear to be some room for manoeuvring within Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.
If Oliver Burke does become available even on a temporary basis, a move to Huddersfield Town could be the best move for all the parties involved.
Oliver Burke would be given the opportunity to not just return to England but also be given the opportunity to show his worth within the Premier League.
It is also much more likely that Burke would be given plenty more first-team opportunities as well as a chance to work under the management of David Wagner who has a burgeoning reputation of developing and improving young talent.
As well as being an attractive move for Oliver Burke, it could well be an attractive alternative for Red Bull Leipzig to send Oliver Burke to David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town.
As David Wagner has a reputation as one of the best youth developers in Europe`s top five leagues may be attractive to Red Bull Leipzig who would be able entrust David Wagner with one of their most highly-rated prospects.
For Huddersfield, the arrival of Oliver Burke would add further re-invigoration into a forward line which at times last season struggled.
Oliver Burke’s cutting edge and dynamic athleticism would make Town a real danger on the counter-attack which could be an effective strategy to take against the Premier League Goliaths.
It has yet to be seen how much truth there is to this link. However, if Oliver Burke is available, he could well be the perfect fit for Town.
