Wagner Thrilled With Birmingham Win

New head coach David Wagner couldn’t have been more pleased to see the performance backed up by the result against Birmingham yesterday, to give him his first win and three points since replacing Chris Powell in the hotseat.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, Wagner had said he expected his side to put in a performance and they didn’t let him down.

‘We started at the point that we finished last weekend, but today the result was much better than in the last two games. Being honest, I expected that we would play a good game and would get the result. We did, so today is a very good day and we are very happy and proud of the performance. We tried to play football on the pitch, with passion, and today we did it. Some parts of the game were very good; we kept a clean sheet and scored very good goals. We made the perfect start with a great goal and the second one came at the right moment.’

Wagner went on to say that having done his homework on Birmingham, he knew they were ‘quite a good team’ who carry plenty of threats in the attacking third, but key to the result was the clean sheet and the performance of the players in their defensive duties.

‘Our defending was good; I think they only had two or three chances in the whole game. When you play away at Birmingham, this is very good defence. We won a lot of important balls in the middle of the pitch and our transition for the second goal was perfect. I`m very happy with my squad. In our four weeks together we have had three games and played very well in all. Everyone here believes this way will bring success.’

With such pleasure being aired about all his games in charge so far, Wagner was quick to point out that there were still plenty of improvements he was demanding from the side, but again he’d been pleased with the progress so far.

‘We lost a few other counter chances when we had to finish a bit earlier and, in my opinion, we had a few mistakes in our passing and position game. We have to work on that to make it better, but today was the next step in the right direction. We had to work on the results after the last two games and today it was important to win, whilst playing how we like to.’

With three points seeing us move out of the relegation zone in the Championship table, Wagner said he would continue to look at performances and nothing else because if the performances are right, the results often will be, and then our position in the table takes care of itself.

‘If I am honest, at the moment I do not look at the table. I am not interested in it. I am interested in what the team is building on the pitch, on the training pitch and with fitness. We are in good shape, so everyone was able to perform for a longer time. I am sure this squad has very good quality and will be in a good position in the table at the end of the season, but this is not interesting to me at the moment.’
