Wagner On Birmingham Point

Head coach David Wagner has given his reaction to the draw last weekend against Birmingham and admitted a point from the match had frustrated him.

Hosting Gary Rowett’s side at the John Smith’s for the game, Elias Kachunga gave us the lead with a little over 20 minutes remaining in the game, but Birmingham hit back quickly only four minutes level and the match ended one a piece.

With the visitors scoring with their only chance on target, and Huddersfield clearly dominating the highlights with attempts on and off target, Wagner told the media post game that he was left feeling very frustrated with a point as he knew it should’ve been all three.

‘After Fulham we needed to repair and show some reaction and the players did that. But sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve. I am not disappointed, more frustrated. I thought we totally deserved the win.’

Having largely dominated the game, there were obviously positives the gaffer could take, and he was certainly taking those as we could’ve potentially had a penalty in the game as well, and Nahki Wells also hit the woodwork.

‘I always feel we are able to score and we had some good opportunities. There was a clear penalty and the free-kick for the goal was not a foul in my opinion, but we have to accept that. Overall the performance was good. We know that if we stick together and show our identity on the pitch in every game we are competitive in this league.’

With Birmingham’s goal coming from a set piece, the gaffer was also asked about set pieces becoming a problem for us in light of the defeat to Fulham, but whilst he knew they had been an issue in that particular game, he didn’t see the need to make a mountain out of a molehill as you will concede goals from set piece situations – just as you’ll score them.

Not everything has to be overanalysed in that way in his mind.

‘Why create a problem that isn`t there? We have had difficulty defending them in two games, Preston North End and Fulham. But against Birmingham, I thought we were strong, and you have to look at the whole picture, 16 games so far. Conceding some set-piece goals is part of football. Show me a team who won`t concede to a set-piece over the season.’
