ADAM HAMMILL last season was surely one of Huddersfield Town’s better players; featuring in the vast majority of games and finishing the season as top assist maker.

This season he has struggled with personal issues, along with niggling hamstring and thigh injuries which have limited his appearances severely.

Hammill started against Reading the the FA Cup, his first match under Chris Powell and didn’t have the impact he perhaps may have dreamed about; however nobody really came out of that game with any credit, including the manager!

Hammill who is about to become a father for the first time, is out of contract in the summer, and whilst he is keen to buckle down and earn his spot in the team, he was quoted in the Examiner:-

“I`m therefore determined that over the next few months I show people what I can do and the contribution I can make.

“I know I face tough competition, and if I don`t manage to get in the team then I`d like to think I can be a good back-up from the bench.

“Perhaps I could come on and change a game. I`ve got confidence in my ability and I`m sure I can help in whatever role the manager sees for me.”

However Manager Chris Powell has admitted that players will have to move on in order for new ones to come in the door and the gaffer has let slip that with Hammill’s contract up for expiry this summer he would expect to field a few phone calls.

Again quoted in the local Huddersfield Examiner, Chris Powell had this to say:-

“For Adam it`s been a long road back from a number of niggly injuries.

“He`s expressed a preference for playing on the right-hand side and that`s an area Sean Scannell has done well in.

“He is experienced at Championship level, and it wouldn`t be a surprise to get a few phone calls about him.”

Is Sean Scannell that irreplaceable in the team?

Granted he may have won 3 player of the month awards on the spin, but in terms of assists he trails Hammill’s performance of last season.

In any case both players have the ability to play on either flank, perhaps Hammill’s request to feature right sided plays part of the problem.

The player himself seems happy to knuckle down and try win the manager around, but with his deal up in the summer if he was going to be staying you would have thought a new deal would have been muted by the manager and not opening the door to field phone calls about what was a key member of the side last season.

Hammill of course is not alone in this situation with fellow players Anthony Gerrard, Danny Ward, Oscar Gobern among those rumoured to have been told to find new clubs this January.
