Murphy, whose only previous managerial experience was with successful local sides says he has no interest in taking the Town manager’s job full-time.

But he believes Dungworth will be among the leading candidates for a post chairman Ken Davy has said he will advertise and to which the likes of former Leeds boss and Town coach Kevin Blackwell, ex-Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie, one-time Town striker Ronnie Jepson, Micky Adams, Nigel Worthington, Gary Megson, Joe Royle and Brian Little have already been linked.

‘John Dungworth will be a particular help to me. He’s a man I know very well, he’s a well-qualified and experienced coach and he has an in-depth knowledge of the first-team squad, having worked with them for most of this season.

‘I’ll be on the training pitch to oversee things, but John and Martyn Booty will be leading the sessions as we look towards the Bradford match.’

‘My forte is very definitely on youth development,’ said Murphy, who has made Town’s Academy one of the most productive and well respected in the Football League.

‘John has come through that system but has now made the step up to first-team football, and I believe he now has the perfect platform to show what he is capable of.’

Dungworth, who had spells coaching at Sheffield United and Leeds before joining Town in 2001, was today taking charge of the Reserves, who were in Galpharm action against Stoke in a Pontin’s Holidays League Central Division match (2.00).

Skipper Jon Worthington was due to play his first match since undergoing groin surgery.
