Lee Clark on potential signings

January in football means only one thing! – The opening of the Transfer Window.

The Window see’s teams splash the cash on vastly inflated prices and sometimes even signings that are not really needed.

Huddersfield Town enter the market for players with a need to secure up the defence after several recent shocking defensive displays – something that has been papered over for most of last year as the team dug out the results by scoring at the other end – something that we can’t always rely on.

The Town defence has been poor for as long as I can remember – Maybe we still have the same defence coaches (certainly seems that way) – You never feel like Huddersfield Town could see out a game 1-0 comfortably. I always end up with no nails left if we have a one goal lead as we invite teams on to us.

The Play-off final highlighted the need for better defensive options something that wasn’t addressed.

Town lost arguably their most consistent defender to Leicester for a fee of around 750k, Calum Woods came in primarily as a right-back to replace Lee Peltier but with the emergence of Jack Hunt, Woods has mainly featured at left-back instead of veteran Gary Naysmith.

Leaving central defence to feature Captain Peter Clarke alongside Antony Kay or Jamie McCombe. Liam Cooper joined on-loan from Hull City but never really secured a place in the team.

So Town essentially have same defence as last season – yet Lee Clark expected it to be somehow better?

He addressed the issue with the recent Loan signing of Alex Bruce from Leeds but he was recalled after featuring just 3 times.

Immediately following his departure was an absolute mare of a defensive display prompting Clark to state that”The same players keep making the same errors so I might need a bigger shopping bag than I thought in January.”

This we already know! How he hasn’t learnt this already I don’t know – especially as he has been here for 3 seasons now!

So with all of that in mind we should be expecting our targets to be coming in soon?

Clark has already gone on record to state that there are 2 players who have already been identified and with the comments above there could be further defensive signings.

But Clark spoke to htafc.com to explain that may not be the case:-

‘We know January is an important time in football.’

‘I know who my targets are; I have a couple. Bringing them in could be a long process and if we can’t do it, I am still happy with my squad.’

‘As I have said before, nobody that we want to keep at the Club will be leaving.’

I’m quite stunned that he says he is happy with the squad if he can’t manage to get in the players that he has identified.

The team is crying out for something adding to it defensively and perhaps an additional striker to relieve the burden of goal scoring from Jordan Rhodes – who will inevitably go through a barren spell at some point.

Just get some signed – im amazed that if he knows who they are why these deals are not already agreed ready for January – sometimes we come across as rank Amateurs – Jamie McCombe saga one case in point

It could all depend on the players clubs waiting to see if they are getting cover in first or anything so no need to panic yet. Hopefully we will sign someone sooner rather than later as it will give us a much needed boost, but I agree with you re McCombe
