ALEX Smithies is set for more time on the sidelines as he requires a further operation to his knee that kept him out for much of the back end of last season.

The highly rated 21-year-old England junior had hoped to be fit for the start of the season but had to concede his place to the experienced Ian Bennett.

Manager Lee Clark was naturally disappointed at the news, speaking to htafc.com he explained:-

“The surgeon who did the original operation will go in there and have a look to see what the problem is.

“Hopefully it`s simply a little bit of debris floating around, but it`s no good trying to second-guess the situation. We`ll leave it to the experts and he`ll get the best treatment possible.

“What`s certain is that Alex needs to get it sorted once and for all, because so far he`s tried surgery, a long rest and a couple of injections, but there`s still an issue there.”

A major blow for Alex but we are all aware of the quality performances we can expect from his deputy Bennett.

its a continuing issue, would have expected it to be sorted over summer. I have faith in Bennett wouldnt feel so comfortable with Colgan in net mind – experienced yes but way short of match practice
