It has been confirmed this evening that the Premier League have earned £4.464billion with five television packages now sold.

There were a number of television packages on sale for 2019-2022 and Sky Sports have resecured four of those – 128 live games – with BT Sport picking up a different option entitling them to 32 live games.

BT Sport – Package A
Sky Sports – Packages B, C, D, E

With £4.464billion now confirmed from these sales, that figure will rise shortly when the final two packages are decided and they are said to have interest from multiple bidders still.

Premier League Chairman Richard Scudamore was clearly a happy man tonight as he told the PremierLeague.com.

‘We are extremely pleased that BT and Sky continue to view the Premier League and our clubs as such an important part of their offering. Both broadcasters are fantastic partners for the Premier League and have a track record of making our competition available to fans across the country through their high-quality and innovative programming.’

With the last television deal raising a ridiculous £5.14billion, that will be beaten this time round as everyone expected.

‘To have achieved this investment with two packages of live rights remaining to sell is an outcome that is testament to the excellent football competition delivered by the clubs. It provides them with certainty and will underpin their continued efforts to put on the most compelling football, invest sustainably in all areas, and use their popularity and reach to have a positive impact on the sport and beyond. We will now continue the sales process to deliver the best possible outcome for the remaining packages of rights in the UK and throughout the rest of the world.’

For comparison purposes, the last television deal saw Sky pay £4.176billion for 126 matches and Bt parted with £960million for 42 games.

Under the terms of this agreement Sky have first choice of every weekend match and will show games in a new Saturday evening slot for the first time. BT will have Saturday lunchtime fixture.

The remaining two package, E and F, are 20 matches from one Bank Holiday and one midweek fixture programme and 20 matches from two midweek fixture programmes respectively.

The new deal however does not include revenue for overseas rights, this time around it will be finalised region by region and the revenue is expected to rise from the £3billion delivered last time round.

Add to that sums raised from the BBC picking up the highlights package once again, so somebody is laughing all the way to the bank.

Welcome to the land of even higher wages, more exorbitant transfer fees and agents continuing to line their pockets.

Now we wait on news and details about a potential winter break.
