Grayson reacts to Wednesday Defeat

Huddersfield Town manager Simon Grayson was naturally disappointed to see his team comfortably beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in the crunch derby game in the race for promotion.

Wednesday started the game much the brighter of the two sides and after a stalemate of a first half went on to claim all three points with goals from Llera & Ranger.

Grayson spoke to htafc.com after the game:-

‘I am hugely disappointed that we have lost the game at a crucial time in the season and against a team in and around us,

‘I didn’t think there was much in the game; I thought that they started better than us but that we were the dominant side by the end of the first half. We gave away a soft free-kick that their lad finished very well and then they should have finished the game in the following five or ten minutes – we were very poor. We need to learn how to respond to certain situations in the game; we had plenty of time to get an equaliser but we tried to do it straight away and they almost capitalised.’

Sheffield Wednesday’s team is very different to ours; they are very strong, powerful and have a number of very quick players that can hit you on the counter attack. In (Jermaine) Johnson, Michail (Antonio) and (Nile) Ranger they have players who can cover the ground quickly. We have got different types of players to them, but they probably didn’t play as well as they can do on a day when we needed them.’

‘I thought the first goal was a soft free kick to give away. For the second, Tom Clarke tried to hit a diagonal pass which was cut out and they hit us on the counter attack. I don’t want to point fingers at people, because everyone makes mistakes. I thought the players worked extremely hard and showed a lot of endeavour, but just lacked the cutting edge to win the game.

‘Our hopes of automatic promotions have been dented, but we still believe we can do it with five games to go. It has always been out of hands, regardless of the result today. We will try and win the game on Monday and then at Preston and see where it takes us. We want to finish the season positively and if we don’t get in the top two we will go up via the Play-Offs.’

The majority of fans are resigned to the fact that it will be play-offs again for The Terriers but Grayson still has eyes for the top two.
