A much needed victory saw Town rise four places into 4th place after a thrilling action packed 2-1 victory over Bristol City.

Although Huddersfield have suffered a dip in form, David Wagner has relentlessly stated that performances have been at high level but we have lacked the luck needed to convert good performances into three points.

Going into the game, Town and Bristol City had followed similar paths. Both sides were tipped as surprise packages as the early pace setters and subsequently have suffered from dips in form.Despite both sides potentially going into the game nervously, we saw a glimpse of David Wagner’s vision as the Terriers aptly acted like their namesake, hustling and harrying Bristol City’s midfield and defence from the very first minute, remaining on the front foot.

With Aaron Mooy and Jonathan Hogg triggering the press, Bristol City struggled to maintain possession and passages of play which could relieve pressure and push Huddersfield back to settle into the game.

Instead, Huddersfield remained high up the field with Chris Lowe and Tommy Smith providing the extra attacking option whilst at the same time pinning Bristol City within their final third.

A noticeable tactical change deployed by David Wagner was the positioning and discipline of the centre halves when Town were in possession, it was more structured and an instant solution to the deficiencies which were so blatantly exploited by Wigan Athletic.

As well as dominating possession, Town looked sharp out of it as a lethargic looking Marlon Pack was ponderous in possession which allowed Elias Kachunga to steal in and win back possession.

Instantly the German forward began a fast paced attacking move. A perfectly weighted through ball cut Bristol City’s defence open allowing Tommy Smith to get in behind before clipping a cross back to Kachunga who emphatically powered a header past Frank Fielding.

The goal personified two significant features of David Wagner’s vision. A high tempo relentless press to win back possession as high up the field as possible and the roles of the full backs to provide an additional attacking outlet. The two features of Wagner’s vision worked perfectly in tandem to create the chance which Kachunga took confidently.Tommy Smith once again bombarded down the right hand flank after a diagonal through ball found the adventurous full back. This time he picked out Nahki Wells, however, on this occasion Wells was unable to beat Frank Fielding. Again, Tommy Smith was proving to be once of Town’s most effective attacking outlets albeit coming from the deeper full back role.

After the second clear cut chance, we saw that Town are still unable to keep up the high tempo pressing game throughout an entire half and instead conserved energy and held possession, preventing Bristol City from finding their footing by limiting their goal scoring opportunities.

Unfortunately for Town, the one opportunity Bristol City did get in a dominant first half performance, they took. After a wide free kick was headed away, Bristol City recycled possession and Aden Flint’s clever flick found Aaron Wilbraham who in turn found his strike partner Tammy Abraham to stroke the ball into an empty net.

Another lapse in concentration will have disappointed David Wagner and the error prone nature of Town’s defence is far from his ultimate vision for Huddersfield Town.

Despite the set-back and some extremely questionable refereeing decisions in a feisty second half encounter, we saw another glimpse of David Wagner’s vision for Town’s second goal.

Although it could easily be described as fortuitous, we once again saw the workings of heavy pressing and a relentless work ethic primarily by Nahki Wells to close down Bristol City goalkeeper Frank Fielding and pounce on his mistake to sweep the ball into the empty goal.

What will have impressed David Wagner was the professional nature of the final twenty minutes particularly the game management and the composure to close out the game.

It was symptomatic of Town’s early season success, as this victory had many hallmarks of the side that was at times earlier in the season sitting at the top of the table.

I describe this as glimpses of David Wagner’s vision as it is still the very early stages of Wagner’s project, Wagner has already nurtured the side and gave it a purpose and an identity but Town are currently unable to sustain for an entire game.

As fitness levels continue to improve and relationships between the players grow and blossom, there are more than enough reasons for Town fans to be increasingly optimistic.

Huddersfield still remain quite far away from David Wagner’s ‘gegenpressing’ ideology, however with his charisma and work ethic, we will continue to see improvement and progression.

The glimpses of David Wagner’s vision we saw in the victory over Bristol City will be come a regular feature of Town’s success over the course of the rest of the season.
