After another commanding performance, centre-half enigma Michael Hefele is staking his claim to become Christopher Schindler’s permanent centre half partner.

Despite Mark Hudson being much improved, over recent weeks we have seen a drop in performance levels which has seen Town struggle in their previous two away games against Preston North End and Fulham.

Although it would be unfair to place all the blame on Mark Hudson, in a direct parallel, we have seen Michael Hefele come into his own when given the opportunity to perform in his natural conventional centre half role.

A combination of Hefele and Schindler defended resolutely to secure a rare clean sheet against a low-scoring Derby County side.

Most recently, Hefele was involved in a tough test against a well organised Birmingham City side. Both Lukas Jutkiewicz and Clayton Donaldson are experienced Championship strikers who have caused problems for Huddersfield in the past but a concerted effort by Hefele and Schindler kept both strikers relatively quiet.

Despite a strong performance by both centre-halves, Huddersfield’s soft underbelly was revealed once again as a badly dealt with set piece led to Lukas Jutkiewicz finding the net to prevent Huddersfield taking all three points.

One positive that can definitely be taken is the strengthening relationship between Christopher Schindler and Michael Hefele.

Schindler’s composure and level-headedness combined with Hefele’s raw passion and desire has been an unusual but effective blend.

As both Schindler and Hefele become more and more confident and comfortable in English football, it’s difficult to see Hudson muscling his way back into the side if this German centre half partnership remains so resolute.

Hefele’s confidence in possession and willingness to either take a risk or recycle possession is more fitting of David Wagner’s footballing philosophy than Mark Hudson despite the 34-year-old being much improved in possession.

Now, David Wagner and his side have entered the November international break. Wagner will be faced with a difficult conundrum, either bring back club captain Mark Hudson into the fold or persist with Michael Hefele after two excellent performances in the past two home games.
